The Villa d'Este, in the Tivoli area nearby Rome, was originally a Benedictine convent. Constructed on the ruins of a Roman villa, the Villa d'Este soon became the Governor's Palace and was magnificently restored and renovated in 1550.
At one stage the Villa d'Este building became the property of Austria and was returned to the rightful Italian owners in 1918, when further restoration work was undertaken. The immense parkland, beautiful gardens and monumental part of the Villa d'Este building were then opened to the general public.
One of the major attractions at the Villa d'Este is the striking main façade, which faces the nearby city of Rome. Other attractions at the Villa d'Este, nearby Rome, include waterfalls and more than 100 fountains, and in particular, the Fontana del Bicchierone (Big Glass Fountain) by Bernini. The Villa d'Este is within easy reach of Rome city centre and Tivoli is a popular excursion for tourists visiting Rome.
