Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa) was once an exclusive retreat for Rome's emperors and politicians, where many marvels of the ancient world were reproduced for the enjoyment of Hadrian, who succeeded Trajan as Rome emperor in 117 AD.




Now almost 2,000 years old, Rome's striking Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa) took around 12 years to build and the visitors' centre located at the entrance of the Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa) contains a scale model, depicting how the villa once looked.

Over the years, Rome's Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa) has been visited by many famous people, such as Pope Pius II and Pirro Ligorio. The Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa) was purchased by the Italian government in 1870, who were responsible for the restoration of the villa, and many of Villa Adriana's original art works are now housed in the Museo Nazionale Romano.
