Rome's ancient Ostia Antica seaport can be found 17 miles / 28 km from central Rome and offers visitors from Rome a real understanding of the structure of a medium-sized Roman town, which at one stage was home to more than 100,000 residents.
It is easy to see how the streets of Ostia Antica were arranged with rows of shops, taverns and laundries. Located at the mouth of the River Tiber, Ostia Antica was Rome's wealthy and busy port, contributing greatly to the considerable wealth of Rome. The decline of Ostia Antica came as a result of barbaric invasions and also a malaria epidemic, many years ago.
The sand which covered the ruins around Ostia Antica has helped to preserve them well and are plenty of historic attractions worth a visit, such as temples, a theatre and a fascinating museum.
